YouTube Bans Fake News Channels

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit busted 22 YouTube channels
PIB said the channels were spreading fake news about the elections, proceedings in the Supreme Court and Parliament of India, and the functioning of the government. The six channels had more than 20 lakh subscribers and their videos were viewed over 51 crore times. PIB also released six separate Twitter threads that had over 100 fact-checks to counter the fake content on the channels. The ministry had earlier busted three YouTube channels peddling fake news and written to the platform to remove them.
The I&B ministry had found that the channels were using fake, clickbait and sensational thumbnails with TV channel logos and images of news anchors to mislead viewers and monetize their videos. They were also promoting false claims and creating religious disharmony. Among them were fake news that claimed the Supreme Court had ruled that future elections would be conducted through ballot papers, the government was giving money to people with bank accounts, Aadhaar cards and PAN cards, and there was a ban on EVMs.
A statement from the I&B ministry said these channels were operating in a coordinated manner and were posting “false and sensational statements” about the Supreme Court of India, the chief justice of India, government schemes, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), farm loan waivers, and other issues. It added that the channels were promoting anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda.
The ministry also pointed out that the channels were not adhering to YouTube’s policies and community guidelines. They were uploading and sharing blasphemous and hateful content that created public disorder and stoked hatred against the Indian government and the people of the country, it said. It urged YouTube users to be vigilant and report such channels to the platform.
Several fake and misleading channels have cropped up on YouTube over the past few years, with some even garnering huge subscriber numbers. The PIB’s move will help in curbing the spread of such fake channels and will protect users, the ministry said.
The ministry will support open YouTube channels that produce original, creative and quality content, which complies with the platform’s policies and guidelines, it added. The ministry’s action against these channels is based on Section 69A of the IT Act, which allows the government to block content in the interest of national security, integrity, defence, foreign policy, public order or the safety of individuals and society at large. MIB has blocked 78 YouTube based news channels and 560 URLs under this law in the last year alone.

They were also found to be using fake giveaways and attempting to get personal information from subscribers, which is against the terms of service of YouTube. The channels will now be barred from monetizing their content on YouTube until they comply with its policies. They may face further action depending on their future violations.
